I think it’s so important that companions go on without the Doctor.

That they continue to do wonderful things, not due to him, not for him, or in the process of waiting for him, but because of the strength in themselves, the realisation of which he catalysed. Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Donna Noble and all the rest didn’t save the world because they loved the Doctor, but because the Doctor showed them how to love themselves.
