I don’t necessarily find these comparisons helpful. Suggesting that the way we treat gay rights is as archaic as the way we ’used’ to treat women’s rights and the rights of PoC suggests that those are issues that have somehow been ‘solved’ and we’ve reached a state of utopic race and gender equality. But we all know that’s not true. Racism and misogyny are still issues that need to be tackled. PoC and women STILL don’t have the same rights as white men. Women are still being denied reproductive healthcare, trans* women are still being denied recognition, and black people are still being slaughtered by police without anyone batting an eyelid. Furthermore, racism, sexism and homophobia aren’t necessarily separate issues - they’re part of a cultural and societal fabric, interconnected and interrelated. ‘Gay’ doesn’t exist in a vacuum - the way gay people of colour and gay women are treated is vastly different to the way gay white men are treated, and until we recognise this intersectionality and stop treating misogyny and racism as ‘archaic problems’ when they’re still prevalent we aren’t going to achieve progress in any aspect of social justice.
