That’s because people who aren’t British think a British accent is whatever is espoused by Downton Abbey, Matt Smith, Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston. The American perception of Britain is largely upper-class, when in reality, the vast majority of Britain isn’t, and our media is doing a great job of failing to be representative while perpetuating this non-existent ideal.

For fuck’s sake, I can’t get over how offensive it is to suggest someone ‘isn’t British enough’. You do realise there are Brits who speak with Jamaican accents, Pakistani accents, Romanian accents, French accents, Polish accents, and so on and so forth infinitely? Not to mention Liverpudlian, Mancunian, Geordie and West Country accents. Scottish and Welsh and Northern Irish accents. We have ENTIRE LANGUAGES, GUYS. We have Welsh and Cornish and Manx! Being British doesn’t mean being a white dude educated at Harrow or Eton. Britain is so much more than that, and the ignorance this fandom debate is unveiling is disturbing.
