Does anyone know where I may be able to access any critical works on cosmetic culture from the 20th to the 21st century? There’s very little criticism on the role of cosmetics in more contemporary literature, or any literature, for that matter - most seem to be historical reports on the use of cosmetics through the ages, rather than how make-up is represented, and what it represents, throughout literature. Surely someone’s written something about cosmetics and modernism and the way Plath uses beauty products in her work? I’m trying to write an abstract to pitch for a panel at a conference on intersections between studies on 18th and 20th/21st century literature, and want to talk about cosmetics as masquerade in Swift’s portrayal of women, specifically prostitutes, but there’s NOTHING. NOTHING. Does anyone know where this stuff is? Or if it even exists? Or should this just be my dissertation?
