Come to think of it I don’t know that love has a point, which is what makes it so glorious. Sex has a point, in terms of relief and, sometimes, procreation, but love, like all art, as Oscar said, is quite useless. It is the useless things that make life worth living and that make life dangerous too: wine, love, art, beauty. Without them life is safe, but not worth bothering with.

Before you can grow up, you must fall in love 3 times. Once, you must fall in love with your best friend, ruining your friendship forever. This will teach you who your true friends are, and the fine line between friendship and more. Once you must fall in love with someone you believe is perfect. You will learn that no one is perfect, and that you should never be treated as anything less than you deserve. And once, you must fall in love with someone that is exactly like you. This will teach you about who you are, and who you want to be. And when you’re through will all that, you learn that the people who care about you the most are the ones that you hurt, and the ones that hurt you are the ones that needed you the most. But most of all, you learn that love is only a concept and is not something that can be defined, it is different to each and every person on this earth, knowing that everyone only wants to be loved.

It’s midnight now and somewhere in a November
that still exists tonight, we’re kissing each other’s knuckles
for the first time.
I’ve swallowed hearts like apricots
and I’ve watched as the juice of being in love
dripped down my chin and spread like watercolors
across my skin.
— I’ve seen what shades I feel in
when I feel in shades of
you.
I’ve lived through seven seas of heartbreak
but I wouldn’t take any of it back
because on each shoreline I found another reason
to let someone lead me into the waves
with my eyes closed.
Do you remember how raw the night seemed
when we cracked the moon over our teeth and let its
yolk run down our throat?
Salmonella or not,
I loved you then.
It’s April now,
and there are showers, like they promised.
Driving around in the rain today,
someone told me that May would be
beautiful again.
But fuck it. I don’t want May flowers.
I only want
you.

I’m not saying that at some point love isn’t staying up until 2am phone calls or stealing kisses when you least expect it, or instantly falling for each other’s favorite songs because it is, or at least that’s what the lead up to it feels like, but real love, is so much more. It’s going out at 12am to get something to eat for your wife who can’t get out of bed, it’s listening to them as they explode with vulnerability on your living room couch talking about how they were only so young when they’re parents passed on. it’s remembering how someone likes their coffee in the morning without asking—without ever asking, it’s visiting someone in the hospital knowing the last thing you want to do is see them in that condition, it’s wanting to be with that person despite despite everything, the future, the past, and everything in between, it’s the intimate things that you don’t even realize involve such intimacy, but they do, in secret, like the pinky promises you two made behind your back, to love one another for always, in the time you thought you were in love, when you were actually just on your way to it.

My mouth hasn’t shut up about you since you kissed it. The idea that you may kiss it again is stuck in my brain, which hasn’t stopped thinking about you since well before any kiss. And now the prospect of those kisses seems to wind me like when you slip on the stairs and one of the steps hits you in the middle of the back. The notion of them continuing for what is traditionally terrifying forever excites me to an unfamiliar degree.

An intimate relationship does not banish loneliness. Only when we are comfortable with who we are can we truly function independently in a healthy way, can we truly function within a relationship. Two halves do not make a whole when it comes to a healthy relationship: it takes two wholes.

Hello, followers! We hope you had a fantastic holiday and a wonderful New Year, and know that you will forgive us for our unannounced quasi-hiatus now that we come bearing swag.
Given that January 9th marks the second anniversary of this blog, Jet and Kaye thought it might be nice to do one of those giveaway thingummies that so many blogs do. So we have things for you courtesy of Neverwear, Neil Himself, and Neil’s very fine assistant, Fabulous Lorraine!
There are TWO GRAND PRIZES:
- Super Cabal! t-shirt (size unisex M), The Mighty Cabal sticker, signed bookplate
(which is a sticker that you may place in any one of your favorite books, though we suggest that it is by Neil Gaiman, otherwise that might be kind of silly).- Anansi Boys t-shirt (size unisex L), The Mighty Cabal sticker, signed bookplate
There is also one OTHER PRIZE (there’s probably a better term for that actually, but oh well):
- The Mighty Cabal sticker and signed bookplate
(Originally we were going to attach these bookplates to books, and then we realized that our Extra Copies had mysteriously Vanished — i.e., accidentally been donated — so now you may attach your bookplate wherever you so desire!)
RULES:
- The deadline is January 9th, 2012.
- Both likes and reblogs count as an entry, but you may only like and reblog once (so you get two entries, total). Repeats won’t count.
- You do not need to be following this blog, though it would of course be nice!
- Please have your ask box enabled. This is how we’ll get in touch with you if you win. If you don’t have your ask box enabled, we’ll redraw.
OTHER THINGS OF NOTE:
- The bookplate close-up is just so you actually know what it looks like, since (especially in the Cabal prize) the little buggers proved elusive to photograph nicely.
- Winners in the US will not need to pay shipping & handling; winners outside of the US will need to pay shipping & handling. Sorry about that! We are, alas, broke twenty-somethings.
- Winners will be decided with this handy-dandy randomizer.
Questions? Please don’t hesitate to ask!
Good luck, and happy New Year!
